QUESTIONS IN REPORTED SPEECH
I.Look at these examples :
1.He said ,”Where can I find her in this room ?”
=> He asked me where he could find her in that room .

2.She asked “ Will it rain tonight ?”
=>She asked me if it would rain that night .

II.Remember to make these five changes :
* Change the introducing verb SAY to Ask (INQUIRE , WONDER ,WANT TO KNOW…) Add an object to the cerb ASK in the reported sentence ,if necessary .
*Omit the comma (, ) or colon ( : ) quotation marks (“…”) and question marks ( ?) .
2.*Repeat the question words ( where ,when , why,who, what ,how ….)of the direct question (EX 1 )
*If the direct question has no question word ,place IF or Whether before the subject in the reported question (EX 2 ) .
3.* Change the personal pronouns and Possessive adjectives ,if necessary , according to the meaning if the sentence .
* Place the subject before the verb as in the statement .
4.Change the verb tense in the direct speech ,if the introducing verb is in any past tense (the same as ib statements )
5.Change the words showing Place and Time ,If the Place and Time are different .(the same as in Statements )
EXERCISES
Change the following sentences into reported speech :
Mr. Smith said “where are you going on your vacation this year ?”
“Did the mechanic finish repairing my car ?she said .
“Why has David been looking so miserable lately ?” she wondered.
The manager said ,”When will it be convinient for you to start work,Miss Snow? “
“Do you know which is the cup you used ?She asked her son .
Mrs.Baker said,”Tom! Why don’t you go to bed ?”
The traveller asked,” How long does it take to get to Moscow by train?”
I asked the garden,” How did you know that those flowers wouldn’t grow?”
He asked,”Who will go to the cinema with me ?”
“Can you lend me your book ?” She told her friend.
